Pieter-Bas Voogt - Curaçao
As a father of 5 children and a kindergarten teacher at the Marnix school, I am always surrounded by children.
I love to see with how much pleasure they play and move. This inspires me to make things myself which makes it even more fun.
A playground, little shop, pirate ship, tree house, gas station or bus stop: you make it once and it ensures durable years of fun!
I prefer to design together with the children and integrate educational and interactive elements in my work.
From an early age I enjoy working with lumber, I was regularly hammering with my father. Even then I knew that I wanted to become a teacher or a carpenter ... not knowing that both were possible! It may sound crazy, but I can really enjoy the smell and feel of a beautiful piece of smoothly sanded wood! I like to finish things neatly; this is also very important when making things for children! I made almost everything in our house. 3.5 years ago we arrived in Curaçao only with our suitcases, therefor one of the first things I bought was a lot of tools and piles of lumber in order to make beds, cupboards and other furniture.
I was encouraged by several people around me to participate in this challenge.
Since I like a challenge and want to measure my creativity and skills with other passionate handymen, I registered myself.
The first assignment brought several ideas to mind, but the "rocking rocket," especially for children, made me most happy.
I didn't find a single vertical swing rocket on the internet so I was sure my idea was original. I built it with great pleasure and really did my best to process as much of myself as possible in the limited time. Now of course I am very curious about the reactions of the jury and all other people involved in the Kooyman Caribbean handyman Challenge!
If I win, I will first of all make beautiful benches for my class and a play kitchen for the house corner.
